And in space, you're supposed to stay the hell away from anything that's been floating around out here for that long. Especially according to every sci-fi movie i've ever seen. And anything after that's just gonna be speculation on our part.

Speculation is a way of life around here, better get used to it.

And for the sake of not repeating things, there are some pirate-related footnotes here. Not sure how useful it is outside of maybe planning a vacation to one of the planets. I'd avoid Ceres, personally.

Still pretty useful. Even if we've got no idea how to pilot the ship we're actually on. Makes it hard to plan a vacation when we don't even know where we're going. Might as well just pack everything.

And here's where I casually note that while I appreciate your ability to joke about our predicament, I am still deeply concerned with how deeply unconcerned you seem to be by it.

Deeply concerned? How deep are we talking because you never know, I might actually be from space, too. Just another day in the life.

I guess when I say deeply I mostly just mean obnoxiously curious. I don't really get the space impression from you, no offense.

No offense taken. I've just gotten used to the weird and mysterious as of late-- not quite space varieties of weird, but definitely close enough. Had planned on getting the hell away from it all, but here I am. Apparently it likes me as much as I dislike it.

[growling]

Dare I ask what kind of weird and mysterious? Like are we talking Twin Peaks or Buffy.

Think more like X-Files meets the Twilight Zone.

[growling]

Wow. Really? I mean - actually not wow, that sounds like it would be awful to deal with in 3-D. At least my world has some basic ground rules.

I'm just going to go with no for that one, because you know what? I might have and just never known the difference.

[ not to mention the observers are.... yeah, peter has no idea. ]

I know the feeling. Post-Tranquility, obviously. I'm 99% certain we didn't have aliens back in Boston.

But when you say X-Files, does that make you government?

Me? No. I knew some spooks, enough to know I didn't want anything to do with it. But the government wouldn't want me to actually work for them, even if i'd asked nicely.

What, is your resume slightly lacking?

[ as if he's not expecting worse. he's been in space long enough to know everyone here has a checkered past. ]

The problem is that my resume isn't lacking. It's just got all the wrong things on it. All those speeding tickets I never got around to paying.

[growling]

Right, speeding tickets.

Luckily for you, resumes don't seem to matter much in space. You looked into any of the departments yet? Helps keep the crazy at bay when you have a job distracting you.

[ shhhh, take your dubiousness elsewhere. ]

Not enough to make any concrete decisions. Interested in being involved with more than a few, but apparently that's frowned upon among crew members. I'm just not good at sticking with just one of anything.

[ ouch, he shouldn't have said that. internal angst is a go. ]

Jack of all trades, huh? And I think it's more to do with the ship liking a certain level of commitment. I don't think you can get nanite clearance to more than one department.

Or some other word that makes the ship sound less like a Macy's.

I think the nanite clearance thing sort of negates department. And every other word you could've used sounds like you're in the army or you work for the government.

But hey, as long as i'm not working in the shoe department.

[growling]

I wouldn't object to a shoe department. That would imply the ship actually stocks more than one outfit ad nauseam. Thank god for gentle wash cycles.

Whether or not i'd run out of clean jeans to wear was never really something I aspired to worrying about. This place is more decked out than my local YMCA and yet there aren't any spares clothes?

Maybe someone else already ran off with all of it.

Oh, they've got spares, but I'm not really a jumpsuit kind of guy.

[ they're very lovely designs, of course, but still. ]

You might have to become one sooner or later.

[ let's be real, it's statistically probable. ]

It was before my time, but apparently we stopped off at a station once. It nearly killed everyone, obviously, but maybe the next one will have a shopping mall.

[ OH YEAH, that totally encourages the optimism theme. ]

Pretty broad spectrum of possibilities there, though I don't know how close we rank to complete and utter innhilation. But i'm glad to know that at least somebody's setting their expectations high.

The question is, whether or not it's a shopping mall we'll even want to go in to.
