[There's a slight pause. Then:]

I love the law. I believe in it as I believe in nothing else; I hold that it is the way to improve lives as nothing else can. But others do not have such faith; when I tried to push for laws, I was shouted down, and so I set them aside, to refine them, to rewrite them, to make them perfect for a time when it would be appropriate to introduce them.

Then Lupin came along, with his glib and thoughtless work of a few minutes. Amateurish stuff, presented perhaps guilelessly but at an offensively opportunistic time, just a few minutes after we saw that brutal murder. And now the atmosphere is more hostile to the law than ever, when I thought it was moving towards me being able to move forward. One would have expected better from an individual who moves through life acting like a modern saint.


[He sends it, and then re-reads it and immediately winces; he hadn't really realized the tone of that last sentence; it ended up too honest.]
